The 3 Steps in an Online Adult ADHD Assessment with Jenny Arthern
Posted on 24th March 2025
There are 3 steps in an online ADHD Assessment with me:
Preparation
Meeting
Documentation
You can contact me by email, phone or via my website and we can then arrange a brief initial phone call to discuss your reasons for wanting an online ADHD Assessment. Sometimes it is clear at this point that more information is needed before going ahead with an assessment. If you receive a diagnosis of ADHD, and if you might want medication, then you would need to have a private specialist medication assessment for which you can self-refer. I can give you information about how to do this. After the process of titration, when the medication is working well, the specialist prescriber will refer you back to the care of your GP and from then on it will be a normal NHS prescription. However, for this to be viable, your GP has to be willing to enter into a “Shared Care Agreement” (SCA). (If your GP is not involved, then you would have to pay permanently for ADHD medication). See the blogs on my website:
Currently, over 50% of the GPs in England are not willing to enter into a SCA. See the blog on my website for an update on the situation:
Some people have other reasons for wanting an assessment and do not want medication and are happy to go ahead with an ADHD Assessment without contacting their GP. Others will check with their GP, if they are willing to enter into a SCA, and they will then be ready to book an assessment.
The stages of an Adult Online ADHD Assessment with me:
First contact via contact page of website, email or phone: to find out if there are things you need to do before booking an assessment, such as contacting your GP to discuss a SCA.
Brief initial phone call: During a brief phone call, we will discuss the reasons for you seeking an assessment, check you are clear about the stages of the assessment, I will answer any questions you have and we will agree a provisional date. (We can do this by email if you find using the phone difficult).
Agreement and payment: Once we have agreed a provisional date, I will send you an Assessment Agreement form to complete and an invoice. You will need to complete the form and make the full payment in advance of the assessment, as there is quite a bit of preparation involved before we meet.
Support with admin: If you find paperwork difficult, you can ask someone (e.g. your partner, another family member or a friend) to be copied in on all emails to support you with the admin.
Questionnaires: when you have returned the form and made the payment, I will send you a link to complete online questionnaires. I will also send you a video call invitation.
Informant: you can nominate someone to be participate in the assessment, who knows you well, and ideally who also knew you well as a child. I will ask them to complete some questionnaires too.
FIRST MEETING:
I will meet with you online for 2 hours with whoever you choose to involve in the assessment. We will have a short break during this appointment.
I will usually be able to give you the outcome of the assessment at the end of this meeting. Occasionally, I may need more information, or may need to meet with you again.
Draft report: I will send you a draft of the report at least 48 hours before our second meeting, for you to check for accuracy.
SECOND MEETING
I will meet with you for 30 minutes. You can ask your informant to come to this meeting with you if you feel it would be helpful. We will discuss the outcome of the assessment and how you are feeling about this and we will particularly focus on the recommendations in the report.
Finalising documents: After I have received your comments on the draft and we have had the second meeting, I will finalise the report and send this to you. I recommend that you give a copy of the report to your GP. If you receive a diagnosis of ADHD, I will also give you a letter confirming the diagnosis which you can use as evidence for your employer or university or college.
Recommendations and Resources: If you receive a diagnosis of ADHD, I will give you further information about ADHD and sources of support and will make specific recommendations for you regarding treatment, including medication (if appropriate), and skills development. If you do not receive a diagnosis of ADHD, I will make recommendations which are specifically relevant for you.
Feedback: I will ask for your feedback on the assessment.
